Cate is a top boarding high school in California with ocean views, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of mountains and the ocean. What a joy for students to learn in such a beautiful environment! Additionally, Cate provides a wide variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, climbing, surfing, kayaking, and adventurous treks across the Central Coast. Cate has a very small student body with an ideal student-to-teacher ratio, ensuring students receive significant attention from teachers. However, it admits very, very few Chinese students, as the school tends to prefer students with an international background.

Let's use some details from this year's application as an example.
1) Cate values students in these four aspects: perseverance, awareness, responsibility, and benevolence. If a student's interview, essays, or presented works do not revolve around this theme, Cate will generally not accept them, and this has little to do with TOEFL scores, GPA, or extracurricular activities.
2) Another crucial point for Cate in deciding whether to admit a student is to determine if the student is a single-dimensional type, for example, good at STEM but lacking in any other areas (such as music, art, photography, etc.). Students who only focus on academics without reflecting a personal life dimension are not easily admitted.
3) Cate is one of the few schools that conducts placement tests upon enrollment, so whether a student possesses a strong heart is another entry point.
4) When showcasing TOEFL scores, school grades, and activities, remember to emphasize your efficiency. Cate students, starting from 9th grade, are required to participate in a year-long seminar project, primarily to help them adapt to Cate more efficiently.

Cate places great importance on community service, so the school offers numerous opportunities for volunteer work. Every week there are service-oriented outings where students can visit seniors at nursing homes or provide food to shelters. At Cate, all students are responsible for doing what they can around the school, such as helping in the kitchen or being a teaching assistant. Students can also participate in the Los Ninos program, traveling to Mexico to help with community building projects.

Cate offers many outdoor activities. Students can participate in kayaking, surfing, rock climbing, and more. At the beginning of each academic year, there is an outing week. Students can choose to go hiking, backpacking, or camping. Artistically inclined students can take painting and pottery classes in the Art Loft and Ceramic Barn. Students with a talent for drama can participate in the annual school play, gaining the opportunity to perform in front of the entire school community.

Cate in the Eyes of an Admissions Officer (Part 3):

Another extremely important point is that Cate School's education focuses on the holistic development of students, enabling them to continuously understand themselves. Our students are very ambitious, and I believe they are not only competing with others but also with themselves. Students should realize that growth and success are not just about competition, but also about cooperation. These are all characteristics that I find Cate to be very unique and excellent, and I am personally very proud to be a part of Cate School.

Furthermore, our school is very safe. In fact, we have always prioritized security. If someone from outside the school wants to visit, you must make an appointment with school staff in advance. If you are just passing by and suddenly decide you want to drop in and look around, then I'm sorry, you will not be allowed to enter.

Cate in the Eyes of an Admissions Officer (Part 2):

I think Cate's greatest strength is precisely our diversity. Our school has never been about excelling in just one area. You know, many schools now like to brand themselves as "STEM schools." We are not a STEM school, but we are much richer than those, because we believe that high school students need to be exposed to different aspects of academics and life, not just science, math, or history. These children are in a growth phase, and we don't know which fields they will excel in in the future, or what kind of talents they might display. So, we don't want to set limits for students; we just guide them to explore and to think. Another point, which might not yet be considered a signature program, is our strong focus on cultivating students' "competitive thinking" – not just in a particular subject, but we hope students fundamentally possess this way of thinking.

Regarding outdoor activities, we offer many water sports, including ocean surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and more. Our campus covers 300 acres, and there are abundant natural resources around the school, so we utilize all convenient conditions to allow students to explore as much as possible.

Cate in the Eyes of an Admissions Officer (Part 1):

Cate School is a very warm and wonderful school, located in Southern California, just a 15-minute drive from Santa Barbara. It's also very convenient to get to Los Angeles from the school, making our school's geographical location quite ideal. The school has a history of 110 years. Our founder came from the East Coast, graduated from Harvard University, and brought some of the most prominent characteristics of the East to the West, injecting vitality into Cate School and making it what it is today. Overall, we are both serious and lively. In my opinion, this is the best high school in the United States, and at Cate School, you can also experience a peaceful and beautiful campus atmosphere. Our campus is very diverse; about 10% of our students come to us with F1 passports, and another 7% are U.S. immigrants but permanently reside in other countries. Nearly half of our students are what we call people of color, meaning non-white individuals, making our school one of the most diverse in the United States.

### Overall Situation:
- Academically very strong. Although there are no AP courses, some of their Advanced courses are consistent with AP content and difficulty, and many students take AP exams after completing them.
- 9th graders take Humanities, a distinctive feature of the school, which integrates English, History, and other subjects. Students generally find it very challenging because classroom discussions, assignments, and exams involve comparisons between English and History, requiring students to fully grasp knowledge points from two or more subjects and be adept at critical thinking and comparison.
- There are two paths for mathematics: one categorizes the math system by knowledge points, studying one domain each year (Algebra 1 — Geometry — Algebra 2 and Trigonometry — Pre-Calculus — Calculus); the other merges knowledge points from different domains for integrated learning. Integrated Math 1 covers fundamental algebra and geometry, Integrated Math 2 is a further study of algebra and geometry, Integrated Math 3 covers Honors Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus, and Integrated Math 4 is Calculus. Students generally find Integrated Math more difficult because the connections between knowledge points are not organically tight, requiring students to have strong mathematical foundations and self-study abilities to adapt.

### Academic Strengths/Features:
- Senior Inquiry Project: An independent research project for 12th-grade students, culminating in the presentation of their research findings, which can be academic papers, performances, exhibitions, etc.
- Advanced Science Courses: For 11th and 12th graders, the range of choices is very broad, and the content studied is cutting-edge, especially in biology and marine science, fully utilizing the school's geographical advantages.
- Interdisciplinary Courses: The school offers interesting interdisciplinary courses, such as 'American Wilderness' combining English and Science, and 'WWII, Science and Technology' combining History and Science, allowing students to comprehensively learn knowledge from two or more different fields, their interactions, and relationships, broadening students' perspectives and horizons.

### Shangxue Mingde Student Feedback:
- The most difficult subject in 9th grade is Humanities, with a lot of writing, and teachers are generally very strict with grading.
- In some math classes, teachers directly use exercise books to teach, making the knowledge points relatively scattered and demanding a high level of foundational knowledge and self-study ability from students.

[2019 China Recruitment Fair On-site Report]
1. A school dedicated to combining the spirit of the American West with the academic rigor of the East Coast. Known university placements for Chinese students in the past two years include Brown University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and others.
2. Predominantly a liberal arts school with high academic requirements. The school arranges for teachers and senior students to help junior students with their academic questions.
3. A school with fewer than 300 students, boasting a high teacher-to-student ratio and dedicated staff for college counseling. Current Chinese parents are not rushing to find application consultants, and some senior students haven't used consultants either. The number of mainland Chinese students admitted each year is very small, with previous cohorts coming from areas like Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, etc.
4. The school's strong sports programs include: tennis, volleyball, and cross-country running.
