Portledge is located in the wealthy area of Long Island, New York, a 45-minute drive from JFK Airport. We have students enrolled there who report that the curriculum is not difficult and the school pays great attention to students. The school offers courses such as robotics and chess. The school's advantages are as follows:
1. Broad Curriculum: Chess is also a course, with an emphasis on computer science and robotics. Personalized Courses: Many senior students can take the school's Online Classes.
2. Rich Curriculum Offerings: Includes AP courses, IB courses, and honor courses. Theory of Knowledge is a required course for graduation certificates, and also an elective and interdisciplinary course designed to help students ask questions and understand how they know what they know.
3. Unique Programs: Harvard Project Zero: The elementary school offers the Harvard Project Zero program. Portledge Pathways allows students to establish learning partnerships with local hospitals and universities. The school's PISA Scholars program provides numerous travel opportunities to Italy, France, and Spain.
4. Outstanding Ballet Program: There are 8 ballet courses of different levels, led by Ms. Catherine Moore, formerly of the Russian Ballet School. Courses are graded by age and ability, from creative movement for the youngest participants to Ballet IV, including pointe training and character development.
5. After-School Adventure Programs: Open to both on-campus and off-campus students; includes gymnastics and fencing; card exchange courses.

The school is not large in scale, but the environment is beautiful and not ostentatious, giving a feeling of peaceful seclusion. The student body mainly consists of local students from Long Island, specifically between Port Washington and Huntington, so the competitiveness is not very strong. However, most students in this area come from good family backgrounds; they are very polite, dress appropriately, and are relatively innocent. The school atmosphere is very warm, and the parent committee organizes many activities to promote community interaction. Families from China are also highly valued, with a monthly morning tea gathering specifically for Chinese families.
If a child is highly competitive, they might find it lacks sufficient challenge, although the IB program still offers some rigor. Day schools don't have as many on-campus resources as boarding schools, but if living on Long Island, most families will have their own resources, and if utilized properly, it can be a great experience for both the family and the child. Additionally, college placements are quite good.
My family lives on Long Island, and my child has been attending Portledge for several years now; overall, we are very happy with it.
