Saint John's Preparatory School is a regular high school with an additional IB program. So, if a student completes both, they effectively earn two graduation diplomas. At Saint John's in Minnesota, students can take several individual IB courses without pursuing the full IB diploma. Additionally, they can also take regular high school honors courses.

It's different for a pure IB school. Students must complete the IB curriculum requirements; failing to do so means they won't receive a graduation certificate.

The IB program has a very unique subject, a non-disciplinary specialty called TOK (Theory of Knowledge), which is about the theory of learning. It teaches students how to apply logic, reasoning, and complete academic essay writing. It is a university-level course that helps students prepare for college. Students generally enjoy this course, and it's very practical.

Choosing IB courses primarily demonstrates a high level of academic ability, and furthermore, the willingness to challenge oneself is also favored by universities.
