Lawrenceville School was founded in 1810, originally known as the Classical and Commercial School, and later renamed Lawrenceville School, gradually developing its unique academic system and teaching model.
The school excels academically, with its average SAT and ACT scores exceeding the national average. The school offers four different levels of courses, including introductory, intermediate, advanced, and college-level courses. Although it does not offer AP courses, the pass rate for students taking AP exams is very high, demonstrating Lawrenceville School's strong academic prowess.
Lawrenceville School's teaching model is also distinctive, employing the Harkness round table method, where a teacher and 12 students sit around an oval table, and each class unfolds as a discussion. This teaching method helps to stimulate student participation in class discussions, cultivate critical thinking skills, and build student confidence.
Furthermore, the school's architecture and the Harkness teaching system are among its distinguishing features. Lawrenceville School's buildings were designed by the renowned American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, possessing historical value. The Harkness teaching system aims to promote collaborative learning, enhance student interaction, and increase classroom engagement, which helps foster students' teamwork abilities and social skills.

1.Academic Excellence: Average SAT score 1440, average ACT score 32.

2.Rich Curriculum: Offers four different levels of courses: Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced, and College-level. Although the school does not offer AP courses, it does not prevent students from taking AP exams. The pass rate for students who take AP exams is very high: 94% of students achieve a score of 3 or higher, and 76% achieve a score of 4 or higher. This also reflects, from another perspective, the strong academic capabilities of Lawrenceville School.

3.Teaching Model: Lawrenceville School adopts the Harkness round table teaching method. This method involves a teacher and 12 students sitting around an oval table, with each class conducted in the form of a discussion. This teaching style helps to stimulate students' participation in classroom discussions, cultivate their critical thinking skills, and build their self-confidence.

4.Interdisciplinary Research Project: Not a standalone department, but a series of courses drawn from our core disciplines such as History, Mathematics, Science, English, Foreign Languages, Art, Religion, and Philosophy. Students will become familiar with the insights, approaches, and methods of these core disciplines. Subsequently, interdisciplinary courses are further developed by encouraging students to integrate two or more disciplines.

5.Independent Research Project: Awards students a $3,000 scholarship. Students can submit research plans and proposals at a specified time each year. The school selects outstanding topics from the applicants. Research topics cover various fields such as technology, human rights, community, immigration, and history.

Attended the TABS Fair counselor meeting in the afternoon, and had an in-depth discussion with Yangyang Daniell, an admissions officer from Lawrenceville School, one of the "Little Ivies."
1. When discussing the applicant pool, the admissions officer stated that Lawrenceville does not have a fixed quota for admissions from mainland China each year, nor does it consider an applicant's nationality as a factor in admission. Therefore, families are not advised to temporarily change their nationality or relocate. The school primarily assesses the applicant's fit with the school in terms of academics, campus social life, sports, arts, and other areas.
2. For applicants from 5 Asian countries, the school's interview process only refers to the applicant's Vericant Interview. No separate on-campus interviews are arranged after the autumn semester begins, but one-on-one campus visits can be arranged during the summer vacation.
3. Upon entering campus, 9th-grade new students are divided into an independent freshman group, socializing in a concentrated area, which relatively reduces social pressure for younger students. Students in grades 10-12 are divided into different Houses, and important and enriching activities are organized every Saturday night, creating a friendly yet competitive environment. From Monday to Friday, 8-10 PM is an enforced study hall, and the school manages very well in helping children develop self-disciplined study habits.
4. Various exchange activities are arranged during the annual March Break, such as backpacking trips to Switzerland and kayaking tours in Mexico.

Lawrenceville School boasts an excellent location, just a 5-minute drive from Princeton University and 55 miles from New York City. Princeton University is just down the main road, and students have access to Firestone Library, one of the world's best research libraries.

Campus life at Lawrenceville School centers around its unique boarding system among private schools in the United States. Each residential house functions as a small community designed to foster students' sense of pride, responsibility, and respect for the contributions of others. These houses are divided by grade level and gender, varying in terms of freedom and supervision. Each house also has its own committee to develop students' leadership skills.

Students work closely with faculty members in each house. Faculty members reside in each house, serving as housemasters and assistant housemasters. They also take turns mentoring, advising, and performing nightly supervision. Under this model, students receive a high level of attention and guidance.

The entire school community dines simultaneously, which eliminates scheduling conflicts and ensures everyone has the opportunity to gather for positive interaction. Ninth to eleventh graders dine in the Irwin Dining Hall, while twelfth graders dine in the Abbott Dining Hall, with each residential house having its own dining area.

Like Phillips Exeter, Lawrenceville School uses the Harkness teaching method, which has a history of over 80 years. In the summer of 1936, educational philanthropist Edward S. Harkness helped Lawrenceville School redesign its classrooms, arranging them around a conference table to facilitate sharing and discovery, replacing traditional lecturing and rote memorization.

Since then, regardless of the tools and methods adopted by the school—from science labs to language labs, from discussion boards to smartboards—the goal has always been for students to learn and think for themselves, to gain initial understanding, and to engage in critical commentary. Therefore, the educational focus at Lawrenceville School is not on teaching what students should know, but on learning how to think.

The key to the school's success is that every student approaches their studies with an entrepreneurial spirit. Courses and assignments are not just about passing exams, but about diving deep and getting things done. Students choose areas of interest, bravely take responsibility, and deep engagement is central.

Lawrenceville School has 9 departments, offering nearly 300 courses. In addition to providing foundational courses required for a liberal arts education, it also offers a rich variety of elective and advanced courses for students with different interests.

### Overall Situation:
- Strong in both humanities and sciences.
- There are no AP courses, but the school offers a large number of honors-level courses, some of which are similar in difficulty to AP, and some even cover a broader scope than AP.
- The school provides a vast array of courses. Students typically complete required courses in 9th and 10th grades to build a strong foundation. In 11th and 12th grades, they have a wide range of choices, allowing them to select honors or research courses that offer significant academic challenges, or choose courses based on their interests.

### Academic Strengths/Features:
- Interdisciplinary Courses: Designed for 11th and 12th-grade students, these courses integrate knowledge from two or even more different fields, helping students understand the relationships between them and laying a foundation for future academic research. Interdisciplinary courses often involve relatively cutting-edge topics, requiring highly qualified instructors, so only a limited number of schools can offer them. In most schools, interdisciplinary courses are optional, and students can choose them based on their abilities. However, at Lawrenceville, all students are required to take two semesters of these courses, which present a certain level of academic difficulty but are highly beneficial for developing students' critical thinking skills.
- Independent Research: For 11th and 12th-grade students who have completed advanced-level courses, they can apply to the school to conduct independent research. Once approved, they can carry out their research under the guidance of a teacher.
- Molecular Genetics Research and Projects: In collaboration with a laboratory at Stanford University School of Medicine, students primarily research transgenic fruit flies.

### Shangxue Mingde Student Feedback:
- High academic pressure because the school is very strong in both humanities and sciences, so to stand out, one cannot have any weaknesses.
- There are many elective courses in 11th grade, especially 12th grade. When choosing courses, it's advisable to inquire from various sources: first, to clarify one's interests, and second, to ask senior students and instructors about the courses. Many Chinese students tend to choose honors courses, which are quite challenging.

Founded in 1810, The Lawrenceville School has maintained two clear characteristics: combining exploration with practice, while ensuring its teaching process resonates deeply with students. In 1883, the school underwent reform. Prior to this, it resembled a small sole proprietorship, with the headmaster as its sole owner. Following the reform, the school began to be governed by The Lawrenceville School Board of Trustees, which brought about significant transformations. Since then, the school has established many of the features it is known for today, including its iconic House System and distinctive school spirit. This also includes the introduction of the Harkness educational method in 1936, designed to foster intimate academic discussions around a single large conference table, allowing students to communicate seamlessly with teachers in class, encouraging continuous learning and the pursuit of ambitious goals. The school's mission is to inspire the best in every individual and to seek the best for all. Lawrenceville boasts an excellent location: just a 5-minute drive from Princeton University, 55 miles from New York City, and 40 miles from Philadelphia, all within a 700-acre campus. Its close proximity to Princeton University allows students to utilize the Princeton University Library, recognized as one of the world's finest research libraries. The school admits students from grade 9 through postgraduate year. It maintains an 8:1 student-teacher ratio and a 12% international student population. The campus spans 700 acres, with an average class size of 12 students. The average SAT score for students is 1470.

【2019 China Recruitment Fair On-site Report】
1. The school emphasized its boarding House culture, with each of the 18 Houses having its unique characteristics and traditional activities.
2. The school does not have a strict standardized test score requirement, but Chinese students who apply generally have high standardized test scores.
3. In recent years, Chinese students have predominantly gone on to prestigious universities such as Yale, Cornell, Columbia, and Princeton. In previous years, fewer students were admitted, but last year, 5-6 students from mainland China (some with US citizenship) were admitted. More students are recruited from international schools in Shanghai, such as Shanghai American School and Shanghai High School.
4. A parent of a 2017 US high school graduate shared: Their child, from Shanghai Foreign Language School Affiliated to Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), who had 8-9 years of dance specialty and a principal's recommendation letter when applying for 9th grade, was assigned two mentors in their first year: one for English writing and one for daily study and life support. The student's English proficiency improved from B and B+ upon enrollment to A+ by graduation, which was inseparable from the teachers' help. Students do not have a competitive relationship; they help each other. The school has over 100 clubs and societies, and if a student wants to develop a particular interest, they will find peers to join, and the school will provide financial and faculty support. The faculty is excellent, with many teachers holding Ph.D.s or master's degrees from Ivy League universities.

The Lawrenceville School boasts a prime location, just a 5-minute drive from Princeton University, 55 miles from New York City, and 40 miles from Philadelphia, spanning an expansive 700 acres. Thanks to its close proximity to Princeton University, students at Lawrenceville have the privilege of studying at the Princeton University Library, which is also recognized as one of the world's best research libraries.
Lawrenceville implements a House System, where housemasters in each of the 19 residential buildings maintain excellent relationships with students. Each house has its own dining hall, and this distinctive management system better regulates student behavior within their "mini-society." All ninth-grade students reside in the Four Lower School Houses, while tenth and eleventh graders live in the Ten Circle Houses, with six designated for boys and four for girls. All new ninth-grade students (both boys and girls) are assigned to separate dormitories, with one student per room. The purpose of this arrangement is to encourage each freshman to boldly venture out and make new friends, rather than being limited to a roommate in the same room. In the tenth and eleventh grades, students share a room with one other person and have the opportunity to choose their own roommate. By twelfth grade, to facilitate focused study, students return to having one person per room.
