School Overview

Moravian Academy: Who am I, and who can I become? Moravian Academy nurtures the joyful spirit of each learner and empowers inclusive global citizens to think critically, communicate effectively, lead with integrity, and strive for excellence. Our story begins with two forward-thinking women. Countess Benigna von Zinzendorf and D. Esther Swain lived nearly two centuries apart, yet they shared one belief: every child, regardless of gender, background, or belief, deserves an education that puts them at the center. We've lived that philosophy every day since 1742, because it works. That commitment to each student shapes everything we do across our Beginning School, Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School. For Preschool through Grade 8, families choose between two distinct campuses. The Swain Campus offers a fully secular, values-based program with an extensive outdoor education program. The Historic Downtown Campus is infused with inclusive Moravian traditions and services, and features our Spanish Immersion Program. On both campuses, signature programs build self-knowledge, subject-matter expertise, and a lifelong love of learning. Wherever their journey begins, students come together for Upper School on the Merle-Smith Campus. Our college-preparatory program pairs rigor with balance. Ninth graders build research and collaboration skills through the Freshman Interdisciplinary Research Experience (FIRE). Students in Grades 10–12 can pursue original research with a faculty mentor through the Comenius Project. Sixteen AP courses, experiential learning, the arts, affinity groups, and competitive athletics round out the experience. Seniors cap their time with Post-Term, a hands-on externship that connects classroom learning to the real world. Dedicated college counselors guide each student from Grade 9 onward. Our graduates leave ready for the nation's top colleges and universities, and for meaningful, satisfying lives beyond them. Explore our academic programs and the unique experiences on each campus. Then, when you're ready, come visit us in person. We can't wait to meet you.
