NCS was founded in 1938 and enjoys a high reputation among upper-class society in the United States. The famous Rockefeller family highly appreciates the school's philosophy, and many of their descendants have studied there. The school offers boarding education for grades 4-9, with its campus located in Lake Placid, near New York, covering an area of over 200 acres. The campus boasts picturesque scenery with lakes and mountains. It places great emphasis on outdoor activities, art, and community life, and most students live very happily. NCS is small, with a current student population of 79 and a student-teacher ratio of 3:1, thus providing students with an intimate campus atmosphere and teacher-student relationships akin to a family, which is one of the school's distinguishing features.
The school places great importance on art, bringing it into students' lives through courses such as drama, performing arts, music, visual arts, and culinary arts. Students attend at least one art class daily. Younger children rotate through a series of courses including music, drama, drawing, ceramics, fiber arts, photography, and woodworking, while students in grades 7, 8, and 9 choose from electives offering advanced studio art projects, such as documentary filmmaking and wooden boat restoration.
NCS provides students with various outdoor exploration opportunities, such as an outdoor science lab and rock climbing. As students hike, ski, climb mountains, paddle, and backpack through the wilderness, they will experience personal growth, develop their resilience, improve their skills in effective problem-solving and reciprocal communication, while also cultivating a deeper sense of self-awareness. The school engages students in farm and gardening work, transitioning them from being unfamiliar with nature to being closely connected with natural life.
