St. Anselm’s Abbey School is an independent, Roman Catholic day school for boys with demonstrated academic ability in grades 6 – 12. Students at St. Anselm’s establish a solid foundation in the liberal arts through a rigorous classical education. The school was founded in 1942 by Benedictine monks。The focus of St. Anselm’s is not purely on academics; the richly philosophical nature of the school enables great personal and social growth among the individuals and the community. A St. Anselm’s education does not simply prepare a boy for college but also for life as a considerate and thoughtful man.

St. Anselm's Abbey School for boys is located in the Brookland neighborhood of Northeast Washington, approximately 4 miles from Capitol Hill and downtown Washington D.C. It occupies 40 acres, with 74% of its faculty holding advanced degrees. Nearby universities include Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins University. I have previously visited the school, and some students from Liumei.com have also attended. The school boasts strong academics.

School Features:

1. The school hosts the Washington D.C. area's longest-running interscholastic basketball tournament, the St. Anselm's Invitational.

2. Each year, the college counseling office receives information on summer programs for high school students. The school specifically lists these programs for students, such as NYU Summer Performance, Film Production, Theater, and Photography courses, which can earn up to 6 college credits.

3. Sports powerhouse: PVAC Golf won championships from 2017-2019; in 2019, Basketball won 2 PVAC championships, and Baseball also won 2 PVAC championships.

4. Excellent college matriculation for international students: Both Chinese graduates from the Class of 2019 were admitted to top 40 universities. Previous acceptances include Washington University in St. Louis, UCLA, USC, and the University of Rochester, among others.

5. The school excels in STEM fields. Engineering-related courses include Introduction to Civil Engineering, Introduction to Chemical Engineering, Introduction to Electrical Engineering, and Introduction to Mechanical Engineering. It also offers a rich variety of robotics courses, such as Introduction to Advanced Robotics, Robotics I, and Robotics II.

St. Anselm's academics can, without exaggeration, be called the most challenging in all of DC, especially courses in religious studies, linguistics, and literature. The school offers five languages (Arabic, French, Greek, Spanish, Latin), making it suitable for children who dare to challenge themselves and are passionate about academics. The school is not large, but as an elite all-boys school in Washington D.C., it is considered by locals to be on the same level as Sidwell, St. Albans, Landon, and Georgetown Prep. Its academics are the most rigorous and difficult among them, and GPA can easily be affected, so one should be mindful when choosing. The school's quality is extremely high; according to the school, the number of international students is currently controlled at around 2 per grade, with a total of about 10 international students across all four high school grades, which is a very moderate number. However, because the school has exclusive agencies, the quality of homestays varies, so it is highly recommended for local students to apply. But if the homestay issue can be resolved, it is also an excellent choice.
