The Hill School was founded in 1851 by the Rev. Matthew Meigs as the Family Boarding School for Boys and Young Men. The School opened on May 1, 1851, enrolling 25 boys for the first year. The Family Boarding School was the first of its kind in America. According to John Chancellor’s The History of The Hill, “He [Meigs] wanted to stress that he was not founding still another academy, but a type of school quite new and rare in America. There is a tendency to think that the boys’ boarding school as we know it existed as long as there have been private schools. It has not. Most of the 12 to 15 schools generally considered the “core” group were established in the last half of the nineteenth century…Of this whole group of schools, The Hill was the first to be founded as a family boarding school

The Hill School, established in 1851, is located in Pennsylvania, an hour's drive from Philadelphia. After the American Civil War, the school chose Confederate gray and Union blue as its school colors, symbolizing the reunification of the nation. Students from the school once joined both the Union and Confederate armies. The school boasts a 100% college acceptance rate, earning it the reputation of an "Ivy League Grand Slam." It is one of America's prestigious "Ten Schools," a renowned "Little Ivy" school, and is known as the "Ivy League's backyard."

The Hill School was originally founded as a traditional English-style "family boarding school," where teachers and students were instructor and pupil in class, and family outside of class. This established the tradition of teachers and students living together on campus in American private high schools, making it the first true boarding school in American history. The campus spans 200 acres, with most buildings in classical British style, situated on a hillside, which is the origin of the school's name, "Hill." The school offers 28 AP courses, including Calculus AB, Computer Science A, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics. The school boasts excellent facilities, with 13 dormitories, a dedicated library housing over 50,000 volumes, and a state-of-the-art STEM building. Amenities include an 18-hole golf course, indoor squash courts, an indoor swimming pool, an indoor ice rink, basketball courts, a wrestling room, a weight room, outdoor track and field facilities, soccer fields, baseball fields, tennis courts, and access to the Brookside Country Club.

The Hill School has deep ties with Princeton University. Many graduates from Hill go on to Princeton, so much so that they formed the famous "Hill School Club" at Princeton to foster camaraderie and provide alumni support.

Hill School has a unique, experiential, interdisciplinary mini-term, H-Term, held between Thanksgiving and winter break. During the two-week H-Term, students can explore non-traditional curricula, offering more opportunities for collaborative and creative learning, as well as off-campus internships and independent study projects. Faculty-designed courses include Street Photography; Introduction to Women's Studies; Games and Mathematics; Poetry Workshop: Reading and Writing; Introduction to Fly Fishing; Life 101; The Constitution; and Religion and Food.

In the school's Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise course, students gain a fundamental understanding of entrepreneurship and social impact through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by focusing on leadership development, social and cultural intelligence, networking, and public speaking. A highlight of the course is the practical application of choosing a business idea and creating a complete concept-to-development model, which is then submitted to a panel of judges. Additionally, alumni representing various components of entrepreneurship return to campus to share their personal experiences with students. There are also opportunities to step out of the classroom and meet with local business leaders in Pottstown.

The school has established a well-being program for 9th, 10th, and 12th-grade students called Eudemonia, which is Greek for happiness or 'a life worth living.' It aims to educate them on how to utilize their human resources to maximize their potential. Students learn about topics such as empathy, conflict management, resilience, and discernment.

Hill School is an academically rigorous institution strong in both humanities/history and STEM fields. Humanities and classical studies are absolute highlights, while it also offers a four-year science curriculum covering science, mathematics, engineering, and robotics.

One of the famous "Ten Schools Admission Organization" in the United States, it is known as a "Little Ivy" prestigious school. Hill School was originally founded as an English traditional "family boarding school." It pioneered the tradition of private high school teachers and students living on the same campus in the United States, and was also the first true boarding school in American history, fostering a strong sense of collective belonging among students and faculty. The school has a strict dress code: boys must wear shirts and ties, and girls need well-fitted suits and Oxford shirts. Students are required to dress this way in classes, chapel, dining, and performances.
