As an educational consultant, I have placed approximately 15 students at The Stony Brook School over the past 10 years. They consistently speak very highly of their experience. Nearly all have gone on to attend top 30 universities, including institutions such as Cornell and Vanderbilt. I highly recommend the school.

Academically, Stony Brook is very strong, offering a wide variety of courses. The entire school has 124 courses, and 19-21 AP courses are offered year-round, allowing students to choose classes based on their strengths. Beyond AP, the school also provides advanced courses such as college-level courses, independent research, engineering innovation, robotics, rocket projects, and advanced mathematics, which are especially suitable for children who are keen to delve deeper.

Furthermore, the school is very friendly towards international students, with a dedicated ISP (International Student Program) support project. Many students find it challenging to adapt when they first study in the US. Here, they will receive language tutoring, be paired with local students for companionship, and participate in weekend exploration and research experience activities, which can effectively alleviate their unfamiliarity and help them quickly adapt to campus life and integrate into overseas living. The college admission results are also impressive; the four-year university acceptance rate is very high. Many students from the Class of 2025 have received offers from top universities like Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, Caltech, Duke, and Northwestern. In previous years, there have also been frequent cases of admissions to prestigious schools such as MIT, Yale, Cornell, NYU, and Carnegie Mellon. Overall, the college placement strength is very solid, making it a high-quality American high school with excellent value for money and reputation.

We made an on-site visit to The Stony Brook School in New York, and the overall experience was excellent. It's a century-old, reputable American high school that gives parents great peace of mind. The school was founded in 1922, located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, about an hour's drive from New York City. It offers grades 7-12, with both boarding and day student options.

The school is right next to Stony Brook University (SUNY Stony Brook), just across the road. Students can attend university lectures, participate in research projects, and find internship opportunities, experiencing the academic atmosphere of a university early on, which is extremely helpful for future college applications. Moreover, the school is very close to the beach, reachable by walking or a short drive, allowing students to practice water sports like sailing, swimming, and rowing. It can be said that being near a university, the ocean, and New York City provides an exceptionally rich learning and living experience.

I wholeheartedly recommend The Stony Brook School, a private high school located on Long Island, New York. As a student and a boarding student, this school has profoundly helped me grow not only academically but also personally.

At Stony Brook, I was able to discover my interests and talents by participating in lacrosse, robotics, and various STEM activities. In particular, robotics and engineering-related classes were a great help in finding my career path. The school provided me with the necessary opportunities and environment to prepare for college and my future.

Furthermore, through boarding life, I learned independence, responsibility, time management, and the attitude of respecting others within a community. The school's motto, “Character Before Career,” made me realize that having an outstanding character is more important than prioritizing personal gain. Stony Brook is a precious school that has helped me grow into a better student, team member, and a successful adult in the future.

I am the only Thai person at SBS, but the school makes me feel like I have another home. I've met friends from all over the world. The atmosphere is warm, and teachers take close care of students. My father is also an alumnus here, SBS '95, and he still maintains friendships with his friends and teachers to this day, which is proof that the bonds here are truly lasting.
What impressed me most was the school's care. Two years ago, I had an accident that broke my leg, requiring surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital. Nurses, teachers, and friends took excellent care of me, so I didn't have to face it alone and eventually got through it.
I have stayed at Hegeman for all 3 years I've studied here. Even though the dormitory initially looked a bit old, the school renovates it every year. Last summer, I was very happy to return and find that all rooms in the dorm had air conditioning installed.
This school has a very convenient location, especially for international students. It's just an hour's drive to JFK and LaGuardia airports, and there's an LIRR station right in front of the school.
If I had to make one criticism, it's that there are still few weekend activities because there are many day students. But overall, SBS is excellent. I am very proud to be a part of it.

I had a very memorable and meaningful experience at The Stony Brook School. What I cherished most was the community here, where everyone was friendly, open, and always ready to support each other. The teachers were very dedicated, not only helping with academics but also with personal development. The curriculum was high-quality and challenging, helping students develop critical thinking and become more proactive in their learning. The school always encouraged students to explore their interests and challenge themselves. Boarding life was a very special part, helping me become more independent and build close relationships. The dorm felt like a second family, where everyone always supported each other. The dorm faculty were also very caring and created a safe, positive environment. Additionally, the school had many diverse extracurricular activities that helped me develop skills and discover myself.

My daughter finished 7th grade in China, then came to Stony Brook School in the US for 8th grade, and is now in 9th grade. Over this past year and a half, she has changed a lot. The biggest change is that since coming here, she has become more passionate about learning, turning into a self-motivated student who doesn't need parental prodding. Perhaps this is the charm of American education. Previously in China, she wasn't a particularly high-achieving student, nor did she set very high standards for herself. But since coming to SBS (Stony Brook School), the overall learning atmosphere, teachers' teaching methods, their charisma, and the grading system have all contributed to her newfound love for learning. Every holiday, she eagerly looks forward to school starting again; she truly loves her school. Although the academic pressure is quite significant, she experiences it with 'pain and joy,' actively learning, being self-disciplined, and genuinely radiating confidence from within. This is thanks to the school offering every child opportunities for involvement and development beyond academics, such as club organizations, student council elections, various council positions, and so on. The biggest difference compared to China is that there, the top two or three students always monopolize all resources, and children in the middle are easily overlooked. But at SBS, every child is valued, developed, affirmed, and encouraged. There's no need to compare oneself to others; being a better version of oneself is enough. Special thanks to the school's teachers, as each one is a Christian, dedicating much time and love. Based on biblical teachings, the school's management is both strict and full of love. Teachers and students, as well as students among themselves, are very loving and helpful, forming a warm, family-like community. Yes, beyond scores, teenagers at this crucial stage of life need to learn how to be a good person, and through studying the Bible, they receive a proper education on values (worldview, values, outlook on life). We are very fortunate that my daughter could attend SBS. I believe her five years at SBS will help her grow into a confident, cheerful, loving, and positive girl. Regardless of which university she gets into in the future, this high school experience will be incredibly important, precious, and special... Grateful for this encounter.

The school has a partnership with Stony Brook University, offering students opportunities for internships and research participation at the university. Like other Vietnamese parents planning for their children to study abroad at a boarding high school in the US, I was concerned about which school I could confidently entrust with the upbringing of my child, especially since we lack sufficient time and language ability to coordinate with the school. When introduced to a school with a rich history, a home where love is prioritized, and an educational philosophy that emphasizes building character before building a career for students—The Stony Brook School (SBS)—I was completely convinced to place my trust in it. My first impression upon visiting the school was a profound sense of family from the dormitory staff and teachers, as well as the affection shown by their young children towards my daughter after she returned to school for 10th grade in 2022, following a 3-month summer break. The other teachers and staff members of the school were also extremely friendly and enthusiastic, further solidifying my confidence in choosing SBS. In the future, if my second child plans to study at a boarding high school in the US, SBS will undoubtedly be my number one choice.

The Stony Brook School is a Christian private boarding school located in a wealthy area of Long Island, New York, with convenient transportation. The school has a partnership with Stony Brook University, offering students opportunities to intern and participate in scientific research at the university. The school's cross country team is very strong; the 2019-2020 men's cross country team was undefeated. I once spent three hours traveling from Boston to visit the school, where I met the head of school and the admissions director. Two Chinese students currently attending the school gave me a tour and spoke very highly of it. Furthermore, some Chinese students have been admitted to Cornell University.

"Character before career" (做事先做人) is the school's educational motto. In today's era where the winner takes all and it's a dog-eat-dog world, understanding that one's success does not have to come at the expense of others' failure is the healthiest value parents can instill in their children. Moreover, this kind of mutually beneficial success is recognized by mainstream American society. In other words, only children who understand healthy competition can find a long-term foothold in the United States. As the student council president once said: "What I like most about our school is its healthy competitive environment, whether it's the encouragement from teachers or the genuine respect among students. The [academic] competition here is intense, but we all believe that success comes from mutual support and help."
Regarding applications, the admissions director told us that during interview conversations, she pays special attention to a student's sense of honor and community. She hopes to see, between the lines of application essays, a student willing to strive for honor. Competitive sports are an indispensable part of Stony Brook School, so a sense of collective honor is equally important for new members. The school's international students are quite united, so new students won't feel lonely upon admission.
